Instead of funding and maintaining border security or working with foreign countries to build a coalition against the illegal immigration crisis, President Joe Biden is now considering an entirely new and far-fetched plan: giving Central American countries federal money to stem the tide. But instead of giving “it” back money taken from the federal government in January or strengthening the border, Biden is considering giving taxpayer money to so-called illegal immigrants. White House Southern Border Coordinator Roberta Jacobson told Reuters on Friday that Biden’s program, if implemented, would focus primarily on the northern triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. The president’s immigration policies have led directly to the border crisis; in the months since the inept handling of the Biden administration, the number of meetings with immigration officials has increased. The executive order also lifted the border emergency imposed by former President Donald Trump, depriving state and local officials of thousands of dollars in funding and the ability to respond to threats. Customs and Border Protection reportedly detained more than 363,000 migrants from the Northern Triangle in three quarters of fiscal year 2019. 20 The executive order stopping construction of the wall left miles of gaps at the border, allowing illegal immigrants to enter American communities directly. According to the Migration Policy Institute, Guatemala alone accounted for 49 percent of family reunifications and 58 percent of unaccompanied minors from the Northern Triangle in fiscal year 2018. Jacobson also said that while no decision has yet been made about sending vaccines to the Northern Triangle countries, the administration is actively studying the impact of such shipments on those countries’ economies. Bribing illegal immigrants will not solve the border crisis. “We are exploring all productive options to address both the economic reasons why people are leaving and the security reasons,” Jacobson told Reuters. It looks like Biden is trying to solve his extreme problem with border lag, but in the worst possible way. This is one of the worst reactions to the crisis that a president could take, if it could be considered a reaction at all. Central Americans have been the focus of illegal immigration in recent years. Ignoring the border crisis was the best strategy.
