This made our conversation even more refreshing and atypical: we talked about the importance of diversity in recruitment, but also about the challenges of diversifying a portfolio; we talked about what my learning curve would be, given the evolution of my experience so far; we talked about where NewsCred was going and where it was going. Friends and family erroneously believe that my profession protects me from the burden of this process, but their assumption does not take into account the neurosis and perfectionism that torments me for every application submitted and every carefully written e-mail with thanks. While talking to my friend Rachel about the Passah Seder I asked her about the routine: “How are things at work? I didn’t expect her answer to change the course of my career. While this is the hardest process I’ve ever experienced from a candidate’s perspective, it shows the quality of the people hired by NewsCred – and I wouldn’t have changed that. Although I was in a different part of the process and had received a different offer that morning, it took me 30 seconds to realize that NewsCred was the place where I wanted to spend the next important part of my career. She told me stories about her brilliant and passionate NewsCred employees; she showed me an article by Shafqat Islam, CEO of NewsCred, about gender equality. My biggest success during this visit was that these executives really care about NewsCred and hire someone in this position to develop the company effectively. During this visit, I also had the opportunity to participate in the weekly NewsCred demonstration day – essentially a meeting where profits, challenges and everything else were discussed. It was perhaps the most difficult list of interviewers I met as a candidate: I was deliberately questioned and everyone went through the jokes I told them. He also said that the team wanted to hire a new Director of Talent Development, and I decided that it would be my job to do this job. I met with several NewsCred executives, including the Dhaka Human Resources Director, the Vice President of Sales and the Vice President of Engineering. I came back and met with the Vice President of Global Customer Success and the Director of Operations; each interviewer was attentive, passionate and authentic.
