UTM settings, also known as “campaign settings”, are ordinary URL settings added at the end of a link to provide Google Analytics and other analytics tools with additional information about that specific link and the traffic it generates. To check that your UTM settings are working properly, type in the link after highlighting it in your browser and in Google Analytics, go to Realtime -> Traffic Sources and check that the media and source displayed there match what you typed in your UTM settings. To see the effectiveness of the email campaign and the conversion rate of a particular link or banner in the email, we need to specify the links to the utm settings. Of the 5 utm settings used by Google Analytics, only the campaign source is required, the rest is optional, although it is highly recommended to add utm_medium and utm_campaign for best results. Without the utm parameters, we wouldn’t know whether the visit was generated by an organic link or by the ads we placed on those sites, neither which campaign the ad came from, nor exactly what the ad is and what its content is.
