This forgets the real problem: the 1998 Chevy Suburban, with only one person on board, makes a journey of forty miles at 12 miles per gallon. The group’s focus on dismantling coal into strips will be far more effective than the swear words of the few people who are trying to do so. On the other hand, the heart of any system is full of status quo, a status quo that is not even respected. And humiliating people who try because they’re not perfect is a good way to prevent them from trying. It’s the people who are careful who make the effort. The same applies to the ranking of elected officials as to who is best placed to address the issue that is important to us. Sniffing out others who care about them is a sign of virtue. It is also an ineffective way to achieve real change.
